Do I identify myself as a feminist? Crawford (2006) found that feminism values women as important and worthwhile human beings and recognizes the need for social change. If this is the true meaning of feminism, then yes I am a feminist. However, I do not believe in belittling men or think a woman has the right to do every job a man does if they are not physically capable. If a man and a woman apply for the same office position at the same time and are hired, then they also should be paid the same salary, but unfortunately this is not always the case. My friend’s aunt was working for a tech company for over twenty five years, when a man straight out of college was hired to work along side her doing the same job and was paid twenty five thousand dollars more a year. When you hear about situations like this it seems unfair, but as a business woman I know that market values go up, and companies are competing with other companies for the best individuals for these positions. A few years ago my business was expanding to a third location and I wanted to bring my seasoned store manager to start up the new location, but the owner of the boutique next to my present location was trying to steal her away. I competed with my competitor salary wise in order to keep my employee, because I knew she was valuable to my company. My friend’s aunt should have gone to her boss and asked for a raise, and if they denied her one, then she could have started looking elsewhere for a higher salary. Unfortunately, not all companies are loyal to their long time employees.
In closing, I feel both men and woman should, (1) respect each other, (2) complement each other with their individual talents and, (3) stop trying to prove which sex can do the job better. If everyone could learn to be humble and less prideful, marriages would last and men and woman could live in harmony. Unfortunately, it takes a wise person to live this way and I witness in today’s society more self centeredness and pride. I learned as a young girl that it does not matter who is right or wrong, but if one is secure with themselves and has the wisdom to let the small things go, then in return they will receive the respect they so desire. Sometimes saying nothing, says a lot
