The first step is to make sure you have an apple shape body. Do you have a wide torso and broad shoulders, an undefined waist, thinner arms and legs, a flat bottom, or hips that are narrower than your bustline, then most likely you have an apple shape body?
I want to be clear that you do not have to have a large stomach to be apple shaped, it just means that your extra weight is carried in your stomach area.
Apple shaped women usually have great legs and a nice looking bustline, so let’s show off the assets you have by choosing styles that look best on your body shape.
Let’s take a look at some celebrities you may relate to with apple shape bodies from short to tall.
Jessica Simpson stands at 5 feet 3 inches and has fluctuated in weight throughout her career, yet she manages to choose flattering outfits no matter what size she is. Rebel Wilson is also 5 feet 3 inches and chooses styles that give her the illusion of being taller and thinner. She shows off her assets well.
Drew Barrymore is 5 feet 4 inches and has gone up and down with her weight as well. Second to the left she is wearing an asymmetrical dress with nude sandals which gives her the illusion of length, while at the same time draws attention away from her torso area. In my opinion she wears outfits that complement her apple shape body.
On the taller side Jennifer Hudson stands at 5 feet 9 inches and also fluctuates in size, yet she looks fabulous in the styles she chooses.
Now, let’s talk about jeans. The best jeans to wear are straight leg or boot cut, because they will even out your body since apple shapes tend to be broader on the top half than they are on the bottom half. If you must wear a skinny jean than a darker blue with a nude heel will give the illusion of length. There are some rules of thumb shown here if you prefer lighter tone jeans.
There have been conflicting opinions that wearing high waisted bottoms will accentuate the tummy area as opposed to others that believe they will hide it. Since some women go up and down in their weight, it may be more of how you wear them then the bottom itself as shown here. Use your best judgement when shopping for bottoms.
In conclusion a good quality jean will flatter your body more than a cheaply made one, because the fabric is sturdier and more flexible. Choose pants or jeans with a flat front. Pockets in the back are ok because it will give the appearance of a fuller bottom, but avoid bulky pockets in the front because it will bring more attention to the middle area that you are trying to hide. That goes for tops and dresses as well. Choose tops and dresses that are V-neck and asymmetrical because they will flatter your bustline while hiding your tummy area. Try to avoid tighter tops and high scoop necks because they will bring attention to the tummy area which you are trying to avoid.
